How to Play Violin in GarageBand

Violins are an essential part of many a music producer’s toolkit. They help the performer to stay in tune with the lyrics. While violins feature prominently as solo instruments in many orchestral works, they are used more often to create a soaring counterpoint to the vocal melody. But emulating the sound of violins is difficult.

A good violin tone is a complex mixture of many variables, including bow speed, bow angle, bow position, and vibrato speed and depth. Like other string instruments, violins are able to play a continuously variable number of pitches, and they can do it in a way that enables the musician to play many notes at once. Realistically, the strings cannot produce a sound that reaches or stays at a constant pitch.

Tap the Navigation button in the upper left corner of the instrument window, and then tap the Sound button. Then tap the string sound that you want to play.

You can also adjust the sound by sliding left or right on the Sounds button or by adjusting the knobs on the Volume control. When you open the Strings view with the selected chord, all the instruments in your collection are active.

Play a rhythm pattern by tapping the Controls button, then turning the Autoplay knob to one of the numbered positions. Tap one of the chord strips to switch to the next one. Tap the other chord strip to change the pattern. When you tap a chord, it plays the same pattern with the notes of that chord; when you tap another chord, it plays different patterns.
